In 1976 lifelong Vancouver residents Dale and Susan Beacock opened Beacock Music Studios in Park Hill Center on Mill Plain Blvd. In those early years, the store was only 800 square feet and consisted of teaching studios, a repair facility and a small retail showroom.
Dale Beacock, a Vancouver School District and Clark College music teacher, and Susan Beacock, an elementary school teacher and popular vocalist in the area, built their business on the foundation of music education.
Unfortunately, a fire in 1978 completely destroyed the studios and the store, forcing the business to temporarily relocate to their home in the Heights area of Vancouver. The decision was made to rebuild and start over. Records were lost, inventory was gone, but their perseverance was not!
The business continued to steadily grow through customer service and relationships built throughout the community. Inventory was slowly added and the band instrument rentals became an important segment of the business.
In 1979 Beacock Music relocated to a larger space in the same shopping center, and added guitars to the product mix.
Their children, Gayle and Russ Beacock graduated from Washington State University and eventually committed their careers to the family business. Accomplished musicians themselves, their ties to music in the community are also strong. Both a product of the music programs from area public schools, Gayle is a flutist, a former Miss Clark County and won the talent award and first runner up in the Miss Washington Pageant. She has also enjoyed participating in many community theatre productions over the years. Russ is a drummer and, at age 8 won the state percussion award competing against high school participants! He is a sought-after jazz drummer and has played with many area groups including the well-known 5 Guys Named Moe.
In 1988 Gayle and Russ were both working at the business full-time. For the next 10 years, Beacock Music continued to become an important member of the community, committed to creating more music makers!
In 1997 the business added on a 4,000 square foot Education Center, and the store is 12,000 total square feet with about 30 employees.
The year 2004 was the year the business moved to it’s present location in East Clark County. The need for increased product selection, larger Education Center and a commitment to our employees sparked our much-anticipated new store! Presently we occupy 20,000 square feet and employ 60 people.
We are proud of our accomplishments and of our staff, and are committed more than ever to music and to our community.
We are thankful to all of our customers over the years and are optimistic that Beacock Music will be here for Jane and Sarah (Russ and Heidi’s children) who are the next generation of Beacock musicians!
Thank you for supporting a local family- owned business. Beacock Music. Since 1976! |
