Patrick McCulley

Saxophone Instructor

Saxophonist, educator, and composer Patrick McCulley currently lives and performs in Portland, Oregon and has been teaching Saxophone lessons since 2009.  After completing his Bachelors of Arts in Music at the University of Oregon where he studied under Dr. Idit Shner, he completed his Masters of Music at the University of Idaho while studying with Dr. Vanessa Sielert. Patrick has participated in masterclasses with saxophonists John Sampen, Robert Young, and David Camwell and performed with University of Idaho Jazz Ensemble 1 with saxophonists/clarinetists Anat Cohen and Pequito D’Rivera. As part of the University of Idaho Silver Saxophone Quartet, he was a semi-finalist in the 2012 North American Saxophone Alliance collegiate saxophone quartet competition.

Since moving to Portland in 2012 Patrick has performed in a variety of classical ensembles and concerts as part of the Cascadia Composer’s Forum, featuring music from Pacific Northwest composers such as Jackie Gabel, Susan Alexander, Michael Johanson, Greg Bartholomew, Elizabeth Blachly-Dyson, and I’lana Cotton. He also performs frequently in Portland’s underground classical music scene at Classical Revolution PDX, Muse: forward, and as half of the McCulley-Falconer Duo. Recently McCulley has branched out of the classical genre and composed solo pieces for saxophone in a more experimental style. These compositions can be heard on his 2015 debut EP Fierce. McCulley has performed his compositions at numerous local music venues in Portland, for the Creative Music Guild’s Outset Series, as well as on KBOO’s radio program The Union of Time Thieves.

In addition to teaching, performing, and composing Patrick has also been writing for local online music magazine Oregon Arts Watch since the end of 2016.
