String of Dolphins
String of Dolphins
Is there anything more exciting than being at the ocean and seeing a pod of dolphins playing offshore? This tuneful and emotionally inspiring piece uses the sounds of pure joy to paint this picture. Covering a wide range of 6/8 rhythms, this piece is a fun and rewarding musical and technical challenge.
Program Notes
The title, “String of Dolphins,” is a species of trailing succulents with very cute dolphin-shaped leaves. It looks like many dolphins are playing in the ocean. So many joyful moments were seen in just one pot of plants. This was my first impression when I started writing this piece. To express the lightness of this piece, the precise rhythm sections, such as Bass Clarinet, Horns, Trombones, Euphonium, and Tuba, are key. The atmosphere should change in the middle section. Imagine a family of dolphins flowing pleasantly in the water.
